The Best Time for Children's Photos – From Newborn to Toddler
As a children’s photographer, I often get asked, “When is the best time to take professional photos of my child?” While every stage of your baby’s life is special, there are a few key milestones that are perfect for capturing timeless memories. Whether you’re planning a newborn session or celebrating a first birthday with a cake smash, here’s a guide to the best times for professional children's photos.
Newborn Photography (2-3 Weeks Old Max)
The first few weeks of your baby’s life are fleeting, making newborn photography an essential milestone. The ideal time for a newborn session is between 2-3 weeks old, when babies are still sleepy, curled up, and easy to pose naturally. As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I focus on capturing those precious, organic moments between you and your baby—snuggles, tiny details, and the overwhelming love of those early days. We offer in-home or studio lifestyle newborn sessions.
Sitter Session (6-7 Months Old)
Once your baby can sit up independently (typically around 6-7 months) it's the perfect time for a sitter session. This stage is full of personality, big smiles, and curiosity. Babies at this age are more expressive, making it a great time to capture their developing personality. Our sitter sessions are done in our Libertyville studio.
One-Year Photos (Cake Smash!)
Turning one year old is a huge milestone, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a cake smash session! Whether your little one digs into their cake with excitement or is more hesitant about the mess, these sessions are always full of laughter and fun.
All of our cake smash sessions include a cake and a splash bath at the end. We can also incorporate family photos to document this special moment together for an additional fee.
Yearly Photos (2, 3, 4 and beyond!)
After a year, many parents enjoy annual photo sessions to capture their child's growth. We offer a range of options, from individual portraits to family sessions, tailored to your preferences. Whenever possible, we encourage including the whole family! Remember, family photos aren’t just for you—they're for your children too. They’ll love looking back and seeing their parents in the memories!
